With a week left to go, the writing is on the wall for Creigh Deeds. Two new polls put Bob McDonnell up by 17% and 15%. Not good. It will be a huge win for the Republican party, which hasn’t won a major statewide election since 2004 (when Bush beat Kerry).

In a three-day trip to Eastern Europe, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. made a pit stop in Bucharest, to the relative relief of attention-starved Romanians who feel, like all Central and East European countries, somewhat abandoned by the new US administration. (A perception enhanced, of course, by the Obama White House decision to cancel former President Bush’s missile defense system in Eastern Europe).
The New York Times notes that Biden’s visit comes at a tumultuous time for Romanian leaders, with a no-confidence vote only two weeks having toppled Prime Minister Boc’s government: “W…

Yesterday, I posted about President Obama campaigning with the Democratic candidates in New Jersey and Virginia. They’re not the only ones rolling out the stars at campaign events. The Washington Post is reporting that Virginia Republican candidate Bob McDonnell is holding a series of events in the coming days with several notables – former and current governors (Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Haley Barbour), a big-city mayor (Rudy Giuliani), and some former football guys (Bruce Smith, Steve Beuerlein, and Lou Holtz).

Creigh Deeds wants to close the loophole allowing unlicensed dealers to sell guns at shows without background checks. Bob McDonnell, on the other hand, wants to maintain this loophole. Usually in statewide Virginia races, Republican and Democrats cater to the National Rifle Association (NRA). But since the Virginia Tech massacre a few years ago, candidates’ positions on gun control are rightfully not as predictable.
The NRA is running an ad in support of McDonnell – one that I would call irrespo…

With just a few weeks to go until the elections, the Democratic candidates for this year’s two gubernatorial elections – incumbent Jon Corzine in New Jersey and Creigh Deeds in Virginia – are both bringing out the big dogs for campaign events.
Today in New Jersey, President Obama will attend a rally in northern New Jersey for Corzine. Both Vice President Biden and President Clinton were also out on the stump for Corzine earlier this week.
Next Tuesday, Obama will be out there for Deeds, rallying a crowd in Norfolk, Virginia. If Deeds has any shot at winning this race, he’ll need to draw significan…
